The Role
It was a really good insight into Investment Banking, and a great opportunity to meet employees across all levels, as well as other interns - that's what made it enjoyable.
My team were pretty awesome, I got along with them well and they gave me work that was mutually beneficial.
Both manager and buddy were always willing to help with anything I needed assistance with.
As it was a self-run project with a specified deadline, I fit the work around any other day-to-day tasks I had - this made the balance pretty flexible which was nice.
The work I was doing was more research based, so it was more valuable from an information perspective rather than taking on some of the team's responsibility. Saying that, I did start to help with the day-to-day work, and my project was used/presented to others.
Not only did my project boost my understanding of the topic/department, the networking I did helped me to discover other areas and widen my knowledge. The presentation skills I picked up were also useful - I'd always previously presented to students so it was nice to spin it towards a corporate audience.
The Company
There were only a few of us on the team in that area, but that didn't mean it was entirely quiet.
Pretty well structured - we were usually kept up to date and the progression of events/reviews helped to solidify the experience/learning.
There were regular reviews and networking events, as well as objectives and encouragement to meet senior managers.
Company Parties/Events
I received an offer for the graduate programme.
The Culture
I found it pretty segregated between different departments, but saying that I got along pretty well with the other interns in my department and did get a chance to meet some people in others.
I lived outside the Canary Wharf area which was cheaper, but not too far away (20 minutes commute). Socialising was a tad on the expensive side, but it was actually better than I expected it to be.
I gave this a 6 because the area is good for drinks post-work, but I wouldn't stay around there past 8/9 - would probably head over to Zone 1 for an actual night out.
We all attended a volunteering afternoon which was pretty nice, and I think there are loads of opportunities to volunteer/join clubs.
