The Role
I was worried before I started, particularly because we had a training week in London away from home. There were such great support teams there if we had any questions and developed great relationships with campus recruitments throughout my internship. I enjoyed the social activities which were created for us which also provided for a great work/life balance. My internship at Barclays provided me with great exposure to senior members of the organisation which developed my confidence in my ability to build relationships with people on every level in Barclays, who I still am in touch with after completing my internship.
I had a great experience with the people in my team and out with my team. I was made feel like a valued member of the team and never once was treated as being inexperienced. I was often invited to social events with them, and they would even let me see what a typical business day was for them. I was made feel very welcome and if I ever had any questions, they were always happy to help.
My line manager was fantastic. I developed a great relationship with her since starting and we would always have a weekly catch up to ensure I was living up to the expectations Barclays expects in an employee. She offered me a lot of support and encouragement which really filled me with great confidence. She also arranged for me to sit with other teams relative to my job role so I had various points of contact and an ability to learn as much as I could during my short time as an intern.
I was working on a project based role and my line manager and I set targets of when certain tasks were to be completed. At times, I completed set tasks earlier than expected so I would either continue with other tasks or complete some online learning modules.
I was given quite a great deal of responsibility as I did most of my work independently, which I really enjoyed taking on this responsibility. As it was a project based role, the responsibility of the full project rested with me which gave me the determination to ensure it was to a perfect standard suitable for the full department to see. I also had to deliver training on my findings which again, there was quite a large amount of responsibility present for me there.
I learned many skills including networking, communication, teamwork, computer skills. In the future, I know these skills will be the basis of success and allow me to build on to be able to progress through the industry. Without the experience of the internship, I feel I would have been at a disadvantage starting fresh as a graduate job with no previous experience of what is expected of me.
The Company
There was a great atmosphere throughout the office. It was very friendly, people would always stop for a quick chat to see how each other is getting on which made the atmosphere enjoyable. It was a lot less intimidating than I was expecting.
Prior to beginning, we were provided with an evening to meet our line managers which was great to know them before starting in the office as it made the first day a lot less intimidating. Everything was well set out before we began and we knew dates for appraisals from the beginning. Also, campus recruitment set up "lunch and learns" and learning sessions which was a great opportunity to meet key contacts and learn more about different business sectors.
With constant access to learning labs, I was able to enhance my knowledge in various business areas and financial products to give me confidence with what I was working on. My best piece of advice was that you will never feel confident if you don't know a product. I learned this from a director and this was entirely correct and provoked me to do as much extra learning as possible as Barclays did provide some excellent opportunities to do so.

I was very lucky to have been offered a place on the graduate scheme. I really enjoyed my time at Barclays and was really looking forward to the opportunity to continue working with a company I really loved.
The Culture
Amongst the interns, we would go out twice a week and always make the effort to get together.
Average, I did my internship in the city I live in so it was just as expected for me.

Barclays have lots of programmes you can join to get involved in other activities like spectrum, diversity, woman's initiative and many more.
