The Role
The internship gave a very good insight into Barclays Wealth and its different divisions. Interns were able to broaden their network and people were all very approachable and willing to share knowledge with interns.
You are valued for what you do and are given early responsibility. This of course comes with the fact that you have to put in effort to achieve good results and gain recognition.
There is a buddy system and so the buddy is a good source of guidance and someone you turn to for advice. Line managers were very understanding as well and could be approached at all times.
It depends on the work/deal flow. Certain periods got very busy as it is a client-centric business. Work load largely depends on how active clients are.
A good amount of responsibility is given to an intern. You are expected to assist your team in very tangible ways and to do so most effectively.
You develop good soft skills and know how to interact with people in a professional setting - something that is hard to train and does not necessarily come naturally for everyone. In general a good skill to take away and build upon.
The Company
Welcoming, open and collegiate environment.
A non-rotational internship for 10 weeks with an induction program included at the start. Well organised with plenty of activities to attend. The non-rotational nature also allows you to work more closely with the team, gain a deeper understanding and get greater responsibility.
Barclays values training and its people and this was demonstrated greatly during the internship.
Subsidised Canteen
Subsidised/Company Gym
Barclays is a good organisation to work for, with good welfare. Certainly a firm to consider.
The Culture
Regular drinks/lunch sessions organised to network and get to know your colleagues better.
As with all places in the City, nothing is dirt cheap but not to the extent of being exhorbitant.
Good variety of pubs to choose from
Many societies and interest groups you can involve yourself in.
