The Role
I found the placement to be very enjoyable and beneficial in terms of improving my knowledge of the work of a solicitor, as well as my legal knowledge. The work I was given was varied and challenging, and everyone was friendly and approachable.
I very quickly felt that I was an integral part of the team. In particular, this was facilitated by regular social evenings and lunches.
I was given clear instructions for every task I carried out, as well as being given regular feedback. If I needed help, the team I worked alongside were very approachable and always willing to help.
I usually always had work to do, although sometimes things were 'quiet'. I had not previously studied much property law, however, so what I could actually do was limited, and I definitely found that I was given more work in the 2nd half of the placement, as I gained further knowledge of the practice area.
I had the opportunity to carry out work directly for clients, as opposed to only for the trainee who supervised me. The work I was doing was often the same work as would usually be the responsibility of the trainees.
As opposed to only improving my academic knowledge, I gained many practical skills which will be of great assistance in practice as a solicitor.
The Company
Everyone was very friendly, and always asked how I was getting on. The general atmosphere was fairly relaxed and friendly.
The company arranged detailed presentations on each practice area, as well as organising an induction day for all UK summer interns in London.
