The Role
The work placement has given me a good understanding of what it's like to work in the IT industry as a back office developer.
You are treated as a part of the team and I never felt that I was just an intern.
I had weekly 1 on 1 informal meetings with my lane manager during which we discussed my progress and addressed any issues. You also get a 'buddy' that helps you settle in and helps you with any issues you may have.
I had more free time during the beginning of the placement when I was still picking up the new technologies. The workload increased over time but it was never too much or too little. Overall I always had something to do and if you find yourself without something to work on you can always ask to get assigned some more work.
I worked on the company' contract management system used in the UK and France offices. Two weeks in the placement I was already doing changes to the system that affected the front office users. I was mainly doing bug fixes and enhancements and as the placement progressed I got to implement new functionality. Exciting stuff.
The placement undoubtedly helped me developed further my programming skills and allowed me to get exposure to new technologies and gain an understanding of the IT industry and what to expect from a developer position. It also helped me develop my interpersonal as well as my time management skills.
The Company
The office was an open space based one so there's a lot of banter and chatting.
Gazprom Energy is a relatively young company and they're still learning in that regard. I was part of the 3rd wave of interns but I think their IT development program is definitely worth doing.

The Culture
They only take a small number of interns but the majority of my colleagues are fun to be around so social scene is very good.
It's central Manchester - if you know how to manage your finances everything works out.
There's always something to do. The city never sleeps.
A lot of the guys play football on weekly bases. You can also get involved in the fantasy football league.
