The Role
I really enjoyed my time with EDF Energy. The company really cares about its staff, and I was viewed as a colleague as opposed to an intern. The industry is coming under a lot of political and media scrutiny and so what I was working on was in the news on a weekly basis.
My colleagues were extremely supportive and the work I produced and helped on was appreciated by the team. My team always went to lunch together and regularly went to the pub for drinks on a Friday.
I had regular 1-1 meetings and was sent on an advanced Excel course (VBA). Colleagues were always happy to help if I had any queries.
Some days were incredibly busy and as a result I was required to work overtime. Other days the work flow was much slower and allowed me to increase my understanding of the industry by attending 'lunch and learn' sessions.
I was involved in several key projects including a price change and was given the opportunity to lead on an important regulatory change piece. If you put in the time and show your manager/colleagues that you are competent and willing to take on more work, they'll reward you.
The excel and analytical skills will no doubt help me in my final year. Also, level of granularity required will ensure that I check my work thoroughly in final year which should help my essays.
The Company
The office was recently refurbished, with meeting rooms named after famous entrepreneurs and Olympic athletes. Free fruit, tea and coffee were also provided in abundance. There were times when the office was incredibly serious, but at other times everyone had a laugh with plenty of banter.
I was the first Industrial Placement student to work in the Pricing team, however, the B2C have new graduates come in each year and so everything was set up ready for my arrival. I was given an induction check sheet to complete in my first month and was sent on courses and learning sessions with the graduates.
As stated previously, they sent me on several courses and learning sessions. Colleagues were also happy to pass on their knowledge and skills.

The Culture
There were a number of graduates in my office and several more in London. We arranged regular nights out/ Christmas meals etc.
Brighton is near London and a tourist town and so rent was similar to London and nights out were again fairly pricey.
Brighton has some of the UK's biggest dj's perform almost on a weekly basis. There are tonnes of clubs, it's also not far from London so regular nights out there were had.
