The Role
A great, supportive team combined with a variety of interesting projects meant I really enjoyed the placement year.
I always felt I was valued and in turn valued working in such a great team.
Everyone has a 'buddy' and a 'mentor' who provide continuous support as well as managers you work for. There is a good balance between being trusted to use your initiative whilst continuously having the support network in place.
The nature of the work is project based therefore in busy periods you work the hours necessary for the job to be done to a high standard (which can be long days!). In quiet periods you have the chance to catch up on other tasks and be involved in non-client work, for example attending university careers fairs as a representative from EY. Flexibility is key!
The level of responsibility I had depended on the size of the project and the particular managers. Smaller projects often meant more responsibility. The highly sensitive nature of the work means that you can't expect to be given huge amounts of responsibility early but you can and are expected to strive to take on more responsibility as you move up the firm.
From using my initiative in tricky situations, gaining knowledge of accounts, letter writing, excel and numerous other transferable skills, the skills developed over the course of the year will definitely be applicable for my degree and beyond.
The Company
Working in a Regional Office, although everyone works hard, everyone is friendly and you get to know other people from different service lines and teams.
A great induction week, accountancy college and training
We were all provided with accommodation in Manchester to attend ICAS college for a month at the start of the placement year where we took 2 out of 5 first year chartered accountancy exams. Throughout the year I attended numerous Restructuring specific training days and sessions.

The Culture
Having lived with each other in Induction week and college, we remained in close contact and met up numerous times throughout the year.
