The Role
The placement was very well organised and involved a good range of tasks, which were both interesting and challenging.
The organiser of the scheme was very friendly and inviting, as were the other participants on the scheme. Staff at the school that I was placed at were also very helpful, but obviously I was just a beginner.
The organiser of the scheme gave a very informative and useful 2 day session on how to get the most of our placements. He then helped with organising my place and kept up to date with how my experiences were going. My mentor at the school was also very supportive and gave up quite a lot of her time to help me.
While I was in school there were plenty of things to do, but then I got a bit of a break when I went home for the day, with just a few tasks to complete.
I was given a couple of classes to teach, including one in which the teacher was absent and left me to fill in and help with some of the cover work. I was also encouraged to interact with the students as much as possible and help them with any difficulties.
As I am doing a PGCE next year it gave me great insight into what to expect, as well as providing me with a very good level of knowledge as to the basics of teaching and life in school. Teaching lessons also increased my confidence and by the end of the placement I felt comfortable standing in front of a class and talking to students.
The Company
Everyone was very friendly and chatty during breaks etc despite being very busy.
Everything was dealt with quickly and efficently and the scheme organiser kept up to date with what I was doing, every step of the way.
The scheme organiser gave out a lot of information about different routes into teaching and encouraged applications and any questions. The school then also spent a good of time explaining the ethos of the school to me as well as giving me useful feedback on my performances.
It was not a scheme that leads to a job, but I was offered a place on a PGCE course when I applied.
The Culture
On the training days all of the participants got on well, however we then went to different schools. Everyone at the school was very friendly though and invited me out after work.
I just lived in my normal student accommodation.
My placement was only a few weeks long, but the nightlife in the area is good.
There was the opportunity to help with different after school clubs and to socialise with other members of staff.
