    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I had a great experience during my 8 weeks at Grant Thornton. The Birmingham office made me feel most welcome and the work I was given was challenging and enjoyable.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Overall I felt valued by my colleagues. Everyone made the effort to learn your name and check how you were getting on. Working in audit meant I spent much of my time on client site so it was important to build a relationship with the colleagues on site quickly.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • At Grant Thornton I felt I was given a reasonable amount of support from supervisors on client sites. As the internship went on I was given less guidance and expected to ask for help when i needed it.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • There was never nothing to do!

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • At the beginning it felt like I was jumping through hoops when looking through financial accounts, but by the end I realised this was giving me the necessary skills to become more independent in my work.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The skills I developed helped me to gain an understanding into financial accounts and helped me decide which service line I would want to continue in after my final year at university.

    4/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The Birmingham Colmore office is brand new and open plan. There were always things going on. The only regret I have was because I was an intern in the audit department, I did not spend as much time in the office as I would have liked to in order to experience this.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Grant Thornton have a dedicated team working on the internships and graduate recruitment. There was a structure to the intern programme that meant overall the placement was very well organised.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • As an intern I was suprised when we were all given the opportunity to go on a two night course at Grant Thornton's Bradenham training manor. This allowed me to get to know other interns whilst partake in an invaluable course on Business Insight and Presentation Skills. This has been both beneficial to my degree, to the presentation at the end of my internship and to the rest of my life.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Sports and Social Club

    National Travel

    Company Parties/Events

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • After completing my internship in the Public Sector Audit department, I was also able to gain work experience in other service lines. At the end of my internship I chose to pursue a graduate job in Corporate Tax with Grant Thornton. They were both accommodating and flexible.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There was a good social scene, although being on audit client sites meant that alot of the time you were travelling late and unable to attend some events.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Birmingham has a varied nightlife and property available. As a student here I was able to live in my current student house so saved money there.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Birmingham nightlife has a lot to offer from acoustic nights and pubs to big clubs like Gatecrasher.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • We took part in a Corporate responsibility day which involved building a sensory garden for a local school. This was enjoyable and helped us to get to know the other interns.
