The Role
Excellent working atmosphere. The team welcomed me as a placement student and didn't mind going out of their way to answer any questions I had. I was given a lot of responsibility which seems daunting at first but when you get know everyone and see the dynamics of the Costain environment you quickly build confidence and feel part of the team.
I was given a fair amount of responsibility straight away but feel this was because my colleagues valued having me around. I was always treated as a Costain employee, never a student who was simply there to make coffee as many people perceive placements to be about,
Regular guidance and team meetings with my line manager. I was also assigned a buddy to help me get started. Occasional contact with the Undergraduate services meant that I could also ask any questions about my summer placement.
I was lucky enough to arrive at the start of a new project when there was a lot of work to get done. It was very rare that I'd find myself with nothing to do.
I was given a lot of responsibility from the word go. I had early involvement in team meetings where I would often be delegated new tasks.
I am now studying my last year of university and have already used a lot of my knowledge I have gained from my placement.
The Company
There was a great working atmosphere. I quickly learnt the office dynamics. Everyone were willing to help with any queries I had and made me feel part of the team.
The introduction day in the head office gave an insight of what I was to expect on my first day. It also gave me a chance to meet other placement students working for Costain. There were also regular contact with the Undergraduate services who made sure I was on track and fitting in with the team.
Office staff gave me time to start my quarterly report and spent time with me giving guidance and advice on how best to go about my personal development.

If all go's well in my final assessment centre I hope to be working before this time next year,
The Culture
Costain have sites all over the country so many of the guys I met on the intro day I didn't see again. However, the graduate engineers on the London sites often organised socials.
Anywhere in central London is expensive although Costain gives an extra London allowance.
Great nightlife all over London.
I wasn't on placement long enough to take part in any activities.
