The Role
It was great to get some "hands on" teaching experience, and with excellent guidance by my mentor and other teachers in the school I was based at. It really allowed me to see what teaching as a career would be like, and affirmed my assurance about wanting to become a teacher. It was a great placement, and I would whole-heartedly recommend it to anyone with an interest in training to become a teacher.
All of the staff at the school were very friendly and welcoming, and were more than happy for me to participate in their lessons. They were also encouraging and were happy to engage with me at any time.
I was initially given alot of guidance on where I should be and when, and how to plan lessons etc. But as the placement progressed and I needed less guidance, my mentor was happy for me to pick and choose which lessons I observed, and allowed me to plan and deliver lessons fairly independently.
I was kept busy in lessons, but was also given time to plan other lessons and record my placement during the school day.
Whilst teaching, I was allowed a fair amount of responsibility, but my mentor was always at hand if I needed her help.
I feel like I am slightly ahead of the game for when I begin my PGCE after taking part in this placement.
The Company
I didn't have an office, but the atmosphere in the staffroom was pleasant and fun.
While I was in school, my activities were fairly well organised and it was easy to contact my mentor outside of school to arrange which days I would be in.
I was given alot of time by my mentor, above and beyond what she had to, in order to show me how things such as markschemes and moderation meetings worked, which I would not have been able to see otherwise.
If a place becomes vacant at the school, once I am qualified, it was suggested I apply for a position.
The Culture
There were no other students there on placement at the same time.
My placement was in my home-town (Cambridge), so the prices were average.
Cambridge's night life is not for those who enjoy clubbing, but it has many nice bars, restaurants and dancing clubs.
I was invited to join with some extra-curricular activities, which were very valuable.
