The Role
Socially, there was never a dull moment. Fanastic array of different activites and presentations/ case studies on different areas of the firm. However, at times, work was hard to find despite asking around for it, so perhaps specific pieces of work should be allocated by the departments for each student prior to starting.
If I ever had any issue with the work, it was easy to contact the person setting the work to verify what needed to be done. However, this clearly does differ from person to person and how busy they are, therefore at times, it could be difficult.
Again, differed from department to department.
Got to attend client meetings, sit in on international telephone conferences and was very much involved in team meetings.
It has clearly shown me what kind of work trainees do and the type of culture there is at an international lawe firm. It has ultimately helped shaped my understanding of what kind of firm I should apply to for a Training Contract.
The Company
Again, differed from department to department, but overall very friendly and good fun.
Great, although I think the departments/ advisor could at the start of the week set time aside to allocate specific work for vac schemers and, for supervisors, also give a greater understanding of what particular area in the department they specialise in. This would help vac schemers understand exactly what their work is going towards and what purpose it holds for the advisor.
Three week vacation scheme, several presentations on different departments, case studies for different departments, optional presentations on general areas (contract law) and more specific areas (securities in finance) meant that there was hardly a day that went by that I did not attend a training class on some point of law/ the firm.
International Travel
Company Parties/Events
An interview for a Training Contract is given automatically from your place on the vacation scheme.
The Culture
Socialised almost every night with fellow vac schemers.
City bars are pretty pricey, but that's to be expected...
Bars were good...
Netball for girls.
