About You
The primary motivation when attending this open day was to meet firm representatives, understand the expectations of working at Baker & McKenzie and to really question if I could see myself working at the firm. The experience was brilliant. Not only did I pick up transferable skills from all of the workshops, but also thoroughly enjoyed listening to and meeting many more employees of the firm than I had anticipated.
I felt that the firm really took the time to make us feel acquainted and comfortable. Upon arrival we were all given name badges and a little time to break the ice. I felt most valued during a walking tour of the offices where members of staff welcomed me and took time to learn why I was at the firm and how I felt about the insight day.
A highlight involved working in groups trying to attempt a mock negotiation. Whilst I have limited actual experience of negotiations, the supervisor made notes throughout the exercise and provided feedback. This demonstrated to me the commitment the company has in developing its work-force and allowed me to leave with new knowledge that I can apply to my current role.
The placement has further confirmed by decision to apply to Baker & McKenzie for a training contract. I left the day feeling confident that my decision to pursue a career in corporate law was the right move.
The Company
The day was structured to ensure the participant benefitted from practical and passive learning. It allowed for a well rounded insight into the workings of one of the largest global law firms.
All of the other placement students were friendly, open and excited to be at the firm. The team who developed and managed the day ensured it was packed full of useful activities and knowledge based sessions. I was very glad I applied for this placement day and intend to use what I have learnt when applying for a training contract at the firm.
As this placement was for one day, I think it was structured extremely well as I left with increased commercial awareness and practical skills I can further develop. Obviously as there was so much information to pack into a limited time frame, it would have been impractical to spend the entire time focusing on personal training and development.
I think, considering the time restraints, the firm did an excellent job at allowing me to understand what life would be like working for the firm full time. We had the opportunity to talk to many employees, walk around the offices and hear from current lawyers who are completing their training at the firm.
This open day was not the first time I have interacted with the firm. The people I have met at each event have been open, friendly and interesting. These three qualities match the culture the company describes in all of the recruitment literature.
Before attending this placement I was confident that I would make a great match for the firm. After leaving the open day, I left feeling certain that the firm is a great match for me.
Everything Else
The buffet lunch provided an opportunity to network on a more informal basis. I think this was a great touch as it gave me a chance to relax and get to know the firm on a more personal and social level.
