The Role
It is great experience being on an industrial placement at Xerox. Everyone is very welcoming and approachable and you get put into a real job with real responsibilities. There are a lot of placements at Xerox, so there are several people coming into this new environment just as you are.
I really felt part of the team; my ideas and comments were appreciated and felt that I could help. On occassions people would come to you for assistance.
There is a 2week handover period that the existing student teaches you all the processes needed for the role. Thereafter, the support from the managers is there if needed, however you are left to fend for yourself as well. If there were any problems, I knew I could speak to my manager.
There is always something to do, and the tasks were interesting as always varied. There were occassions when I was overloaded.
My responsiblity grew throughout the year; as I became more competent in my tasks I asked if I could assist the team and along came more responsiblity.
My spectrum of skills have developed tremendously over the year and I would feel more confident going into a new job. I now have real experience to use for competency based questions in interviews. I could also see topics I had learnt in University, being used in practice that will great to further my knowledge.
The Company
The department I worked in was great; the work hard but play hard attitude was apparant.
The assessment day was well prepared for students; it gave opportunities to demonstrate a variety of skills and was not experience based. After recruitment, you are treated like a normal employee. You are given an induction meeting and then left to work.
There are a variety of online training courses that employees are able to complete during their placement.

Given the culture and atmosphere, I would love to return to Xerox.
The Culture
There is a large student community within Xerox and lots of events occur throughout the year.
Uxbridge is in West London so is quite expensive to live. On the social front, if it is the right place and right time of the week, the prices can become relatively cheap.
There is one club and a few bars in Uxbridge centre. Uxbridge sits on the end of the tube line so the option to travel to london is always there.
There were not many activities identified by Xerox to do outside of work.
