The Role
Very enjoyable work placement! Cummins really ensure that you have room to develop and progress within the work environment.
The design team are a very close knit bunch, who are patient and all too willing to help even with the most simple of problems. Made the introduction to work really enjoyable!
The Cummins staff really want to see you progress. Through ImechE guidance as well as weekly meetings with my manager, i was able to get positive feedback that has helped me develop throughout the year.
Like with all jobs, there are times where your extremely busy and times where you're not so busy. When i was less busy (and i asked) a new job would be quickly assigned. There's plenty of variety in the jobs which are given and Cummins give an eclectic mix of jobs and don't just keep you stuck in one area.
I believe that there's still only a certain amount a placement student can do for at least the first 6 months. I have been a part of a 6 sixma team, which has allowed me to be a part of a major project with certain responsibilities given as part of the job. You do have plenty of responsibility!
The skills learnt at Cummins have been fantastic. Cummins took me on a project management training course which is really going to help in final year of university, as well as giving plenty of training throughout the year. The training i have recieved as been primarily on the job, yet the willingness of my colleagues to share information and skills in a friendly way has always made learning an enjoyable experience.
The Company
My colleagues in the office really made it a great environment to work in. We all share common interests which made lunch and meeting up out of hours great fun. Although a friendly atmosphere, we all respect the working environment. Make sure you chip in for the chilli sauce pot...... makes the canteen food that bit more bareable!
Overall it was very well organised. Although i heard little from HR during the vast majority of the placement, when i required help from them, they were quick to respond and offered great advice and guidance. The work difficulty is slowly raised throughout the year, which makes doing the job required, alot easier to manage.
I strongly believe that had i not been at Cummins, i would not have been given the oppertunity to do many of the things that i have been able to do within the team. Through sending me on training sessions and able to listen to tutorial presentations given over the phone, Cummins have equiped me with all the training i need to undertake my job. Although perhaps it would have been nice to have a few more tutorials at the start to polish my knowledge on Cummins engines.

The Culture
I enjoy motorsports and have taken all the oppurtunities available to participate in events near by. I was fortunate enough to participate in a track day at silverstone, go karting numerous times, view ImechE guest lectures at nearby coventry and warwick universities, go mountain biking and road biking (when the weather permit)... the list is endless! I have achieved all my goals for what i wanted to do outside of Cummins this year... enough said!
Living in Daventry is pretty cheap, probably because there are limited entertainment venues in the town!! However accomodation is cheap and it's easy enough to travel to Northampton or Milton Keynes for the more serious shopping.
Practically non-existant! Completely the opposite to Nottingham, which was quite a refreshing change for a year. Quiet is an understatement! However cycling and other activities have pre-occupied the rest of the time.
Activities were offered at Cummins (golf, rugby) however most of the activities undertaken outside of work were primairly arranged through the design office (cycling, ImechE lectures, motorsport events).
