The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Aldi. During my store time I felt completely part of the team and was given a huge amount of responsibility during my time there. I also found it very interesting to work both in the store and in head office. This allows you to see all sides of the organisation and how and why it operates as it does.
I felt textremely valued by the team in store, and I felt my work and time was fully appreciated by the management team.
I was given a lot of support by my store manager, given feedback, both positive and constructive, though a majority came from me asking for feedback. I was given training on all aspects of running a store and always felt confident to ask a question or for more training if i felt it was necessary.
I was extemely busy on a day-to-day basis in store, I was never bored or had nothing to do. Due to the importance of efficiency in the company there is an emphasis on continually improving your speed and accuracy in every aspect of working in store. While I was in head office I was also busy, often planning my own time to ensure I completed tasks within the time scale given.
I was given a large amount of responsibility at Aldi. By the end of my time in store I was running shifts, opening and closing the store, holding the safe etc.
I was gained many skills during my placement. These included developing my ability to communicate with the public, increasing my confidence in my own abilities and developing how I use initiative to ensure all tasks are completed in the most efficient way possible. I feel these skills can be transferred to university and to other aspects of my personal life.
The Company
The team in my store felt extremely close, on a personal and professional level. This meant all members of the team worked happily and well together, this positive team environement was a major factor in how much I enjoyed working at Aldi.
I feel that although our placement was planned out when we started, ie time in stores, time with area manager, time in head office. I feel that there was a lack of communication, which did cause things to be slightly more difficult as not all information was passed on to every placement student.
I feel a lot was invested into my training, I was always confident to ask for more training, or help if i felt it was needed.
This placement can be used by the organisation to see your abilities and whether you would be suitiable to progress onto the Area Manager training scheme.
The Culture
During the time in store there was little communication between other placement students, mainly due to the shifts worked by all the students and also that we had only met on a handful of occasions before starting the placement, usually formal settings, so socialising was difficult. However once all the placement students started working in head office the social scene hugely improved, and allowed us to fully share all our experiences of time in store.
N/A lived at home
Due to the shift patterns worked in store there wasnt much chance to enjoy the nightlife in Liverpool.
There were no oppurtunites outside of work which I was offered. Though i was given opourtunities to work in other stores and on different projects
