The Role
I really enjoyed my placement, the ethos of the company, the people i worked with and the goals we achieved made for a fantastic 2 months at Asda headquarters.
Everyone was incredibly welcoming. I couldn't have asked for a more friendly team of people. I never felt nervous about asking questions or seeking guidance as everyone was so helpful and accommodating.
I had weekly catch up meetings with my manager to review my objectives and ensure i was meeting them over the course of my placement. The managers of each review i was assigned too were patient and really helpful in teaching me how to complete my work.
I always had a fair amount of work to complete but it wasn't so busy i had to stay late or take work home with me; it was a nice balance.
I was given a fair amount of responsibility on the work i was assigned too. Everything i did was reviewed by my manager but the work i completed (after a few alterations) went into the official reviews sent to the American Walmart head office. I was really proud of my contributions to these reviews and to know my work had been used.
I learnt a great deal more about how to use Excel which is an invaluable skill to have. I learnt a lot about how to fit into a professional environment and how to integrate myself within a team. I'm so glad i did a placement at Asda and always talk about it in my interviews for other jobs.
The Company
It was a really nice atmosphere. People always brought in cake and biscuits to share and lots of us would go for coffee and lunch together.
My manager was away during my first week so i wasn't as busy during this time. I was assigned to two different reviews based on which areas they thought i'd be most interested in and it ran pretty smoothly in terms of transitioning between the two.
I went on many training sessions. There was a massive emphasis on personal development plans and seeing that i was achieving my goals over the course of my placement.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
There were opportunities i could have taken to do a placement year at Asda through the connections and contacts i made during my placement.
The Culture
I often met up for lunch or coffee with the other interns which was really nice. There were only four of us in total so we were quite a small group but often joined in with the grads on away days and training sessions.
Leeds student accommodation is relatively good for the price of it. Socialising costs are pretty standard.
My placement was during the summer when uni students are away so the nightlife was not as great as it is during term time.
We often went to the pub on a Friday afternoon which was good fun.
