    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I adore teaching children and it is definitely one of my passions so, naturally, I was always going to enjoy the placement. I did however have slight problems with a few of the other teachers being unhelpful, patronising, and treating me like one of their schoolchildren rather than a 20+ year old student.

    3/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I got on brilliantly with my mentor who was nice and friendly and always there to talk to and ask for advice. She always gave me great feedback on my lessons and all criticism was constructive. If it wasn't for the other teachers it would have been a 10.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • The head teacher would view and review one of my lessons every fortnight and she was always very gentle with her criticism and always offered me very helpful ideas on how to improve my lessons and how to engage the children more.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • If I wasn't teaching a lesson, I was viewing one or helping with a table of children, so I was always hugely busy.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • As expected on my type of placement, I was given opportunities to teach the whole class on my own with my mentor sitting quietly watching my lesson. I think all teaching students are given lots of responsibility as the children's education is put into our hands.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • As my university lecturer says: 'all experience is good'. The three months I have spent at Seven Hills have developed my confidence hugely and I have learnt new tips to control the children and how to interact in a more visual way which will surely help me when I get my NQT job as I can put them into action.

    5/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • I enjoyed being in the classroom with my mentor and the teaching assistants but the staffroom was sometimes uncomfortable as some of the other teachers would leave me out and ignore me.

    3/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • My time at Seven Hills was well organised, mainly due to the head teacher who is extremely conscious of what's happening at the school at all times.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • All the schools I have been on placement at have all invested in my personal training and development as all experiences in a teaching situation are beneficial and can only improve my teaching persona.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Above 25 days holiday

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Whilst I was there, they were already over-staffed and with the current budget cuts and an estimated 150 applicants for every teaching job, I think I will struggle to get any teaching job let alone at this particular school.

    1/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • I was friendly and talked to a few of the teachers and assistants but some were very unfriendly to me.

    2/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I lived with my boyfriend in a city centre flat and caught the train and then a bus each day so it was very expensive in terms of both rent and traveling.

    1/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I think there was one bar in the immediate proximity to the school, but Leeds City Centre was a mere 15 minute bus ride away which has excellent nightlife.

    1/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Even if there were any opportunities I doubt I would have taken them as I wouldn't have felt comfortable or wanted by a few of the staff.
