About You
It was a very interesting insight into a company I didn't know a great deal about before, and considering the event only lasted one day, I felt like I learned a lot about the company and its values and operations.
The staff were all very welcoming and receptive, and did push us at times to explain and justify reasoning behind arguments. However, some staff were clearly over-the-top pleasant, almost to the extent of being fake.
The different activities we completed were with several different areas, and so we received support and guidance on all the activities we participated in. It felt as though some were better planned than others, however.
I believe the skills I gained will certainly put me more at ease in applying to similar firms, as I now have a much clearer understanding of what the company offers and does. In terms of my degree studies, it won't help particularly.
The Company
Although it was their first insight, it felt like there had been plenty of effort. We had a clear timetable, and were rotated accordingly between activities, and experienced a little of each section. It would have been nice to experience a little more, however.
There was a positive atmosphere during the insight, although I felt that the groups were a little too large, and the event was not as personal as I would have liked. Others expressed similar thoughts, as many team activities were done in groups of 10 or 12.
This was an insight day, so there was little invested in us, apart from one day of activities. Still, I felt it a worthwhile experience in developing our knowledge and skills related to investment and portfolio management.
The insight was clear in showing the different aspects of the division I had applied for, and demonstrated typical situations and parts of the job. In this respect, the insight was very good in showing how the firm was.
We had several presentations, and one in particular showed us clearly what the culture at the firm was. It was made apparent to us on many occasions what the culture was, and it resonated throughout the day.
I thought the content of the day was extremely useful in helping me decide my future career path. Before attending the insight day, I was unsure of whether the firm offered me much, but after, it was clear it was a field I am keenly interested in.
Everything Else
I was not paid, but expenses were reimbursed, and snacks were provided. Given that it was an insight day, I did not expect to be paid, nor reimbursed expenses. In this respect, the day was not as I expected.
During the afternoon snack break, there was a clear networking session made available to us with people from across the firm. We worked with staff on all our activities so continually were exposed to them.
As mentioned above, there was an opportunity to network. However, there were so many people present that it was difficult to talk with any employees on a one to one basis, and in this respect it was not so good.
I did not manage to find out about activities outside of work for employees, but I was not expecting to find out anything about them, and so was not surprised when I did not discover anything about them.
I would definitely recommend this insight to a friend, as it was a friendly, involving and exciting insight into a firm that is a huge player in its field. I would not hesitate to recommend the insight to anyone.
