The Role
Thoroughly enjoyed it - learnt an awful lot, worked on some great projects, met some great people and made some good friends.
After three months I felt like I had really settled in and began taking responsibility for my own work. Working without supervision and being trusted and valued as a colleague.
Worked closely with many engineers received guidance from all along the way. My work supervisor was particularly helpful, helping me with general queries and my University reports.
I never ran out of work but there were times when I was really busy. Never to the point of being overworked but enough so that I was challenged in my ability to self-organise, plan and manage my workload.
As I say, after the first three months I really felt as if I was given the responsibility to get on with work unsupervised. I was asked if I had capacity to start new work and if I did I would be given an outline of what was required and then get on with it.
The main thing I have learnt is how to handle myself in a work environment. My team work, communication, presentation abilities have all really improved all of which are from working. While University can provide you with a good technical understanding of Engineering which I still managed to develop while at Arup, only by working have I truly appreciated what Engineering is and what it takes to be an Engineer. I feel like I have grown up a lot as well, it will be interesting to return to being a Student!
The Company
Great fun. All the Engineers were great characters - approachable, friendly and one a book of knowledge waiting to teach me something. Great work social events as well.
Very well. I had an interview and then received a Job offer in the following days. I asked if I could start a month later because I had a holiday booked to which they said yes of course. The placement was challenging and fun. I had lots of opportunities to do a range of work as well as visit site and go to lectures and talks.
The company paid for me to go on several training courses and sponsored myself and a team of new graduates to enter two competitions. Merit 2014 and Ice Communication Competition. Not to mention all the time each engineer took in explaining something to me or teaching me something.

I would love to come back. After my degree I will certainly be applying to Arup's graduate scheme.
The Culture
I started my placement along with 2 or 3 summer placements students my age as well as another 2 or 3 year in industry students also in our age group. Two months later the new graduates started so by then there was a large group of us (similar in age) of which I spent most of my time with. However I still socialized with many other Engineers who I met through badminton, squash and Arup social events.
I got by on £100 a week (Not taking into account Rent which was £325 a month - which is quite expensive for the area but I wanted a nicer house.) I had enough money to do the things I wanted.
Epic.
Yes I played 5 aside football, Squash, Badminton plus attended work socials for example ‘Pub of the Month.’
