The Role
I really enjoyed my whole internship, it's been an amazing insight into what it's like to work in fundraising and events within the charity sector. The CV training we were given was incredibly useful, and the job itself has taught me a lot of new skills, and given me more confidence in my own ability. The only downside was that I don't live in London and had to make a long commute to work.
I felt valued by my colleagues, receiving regular feedback from my manager and other team members was useful, and meant I felt like the work I was doing was playing an important role.
I was given a lot of support from my manager, we had weekly 1 to 1 sessions to review all the work I'd done and to work on my personal development. In the first week of my internship I came up with a list of skills I wanted to develop and we then came up with a plan to develop each of them throughout the course of the internship, and I wrote a STAR example for each of these skills to use in job applications and interviews.
The work level has varied, some weeks I have been extremely busy, which I've really enjoyed, but other weeks I've had a lot less to do. But if I don't have enough work I have been able to ask the team and they have always tried to find me more jobs to do.
I feel I was given quite a lot of responsibility during my internship, for example, I was solely responsibe for communicating with over 100 volunteers for one of our events, and managing the volunteer schedule for that event. It was a great experience and I felt like an essential part of the team.
Throughout the course of the internship I have been working on a number of skills I wanted to develop, and I feel I have successfully developed all of them. The variety of work I've done has developed my skills in areas I'd never even thought about before, and have given me so much more experience to add to my CV.
The Company
Although everyone is very busy a lot of the time, the other interns are always up for having lunch and a chat. The team organised lunches for us and I enjoyed getting to know them all.
The whole scheme is well organised, the application process is good, and they offered me a telephone interview which was really useful as I live a long way from London. There is also a leavers event organised and a variety of workshops and training sessions have been provided which have proven useful.
I think they invested a fair amount, delivering various workshops for the interns and organising placement reviews throughout the internship.
Subsidised Canteen
I would love to come back and work at CRUK, unfortuately I haven't seen any jobs I would be able to apply for while I've been here but I will keep looking!
The Culture
I have made some really great friends on the internship, there has always been someone around to have lunch with, and even a trip to see Wicked with one of the other interns.
It's London so it's quite expensive compared to Newcastle where I normally live!
I don't know, I have been going back home to Newcastle at the weekends, but there are a lot of restaurants and pubs near by.
There were a few, although it was difficult for me to get involved as I was only in London 3 nights a week.
