About You
Particularly work-shadowing. The first day was fairly long, one of the longer talks could've perhaps come on day 2. Being forced to check out on Friday was a massive annoyance, however, I would've very much appreciated being able to stay Friday night and leave on Saturday morning in my own time; not only did I have to take my luggage to the networking event but also travel across London to help friends with their luggage before coming back to Liverpool Street to go home.
Out of 8 desks, I felt valued in 7, though in Credit Sales we were pushed between grads who were all extremely busy so did not get a good chance to understand their work.
In general, good support in work shadowing and trading simulations. Some desks, such as ABF and Credit Sales were less prepared for the interns and did not have much planned. On the other hand, desks like Prime Services had many exercises and highly useful tips, which I was very grateful for.
A great deal; although the networking talk was long it was highly useful. Work shadowing allowed me to experience the different cultures and challenges of different desks, as well as how they all fit together under the RBS banner, which helped me to determine in which areas of the bank I feel I would slot in well.
The Company
Generally well-structured. There were some issues with the CSR, mainly due to confusion over when it was in relation to the assessment and travel arrangements (we paid for tube travel ourselves, even though RBS promised to do so).
Overall, good; the pub quiz was an excellent way to meet new interns (though there could've been more food) - a similar, optional event (perhaps bowling) could've been good for Wednesday or Thursday.
Good; the first two days primarily provided skills and training. While the talks were slightly long, they were interesting and provided a good foundation for future development.
A fair deal, the work-shadowing meant we saw what employees do and how they do it; their comments gave a good indication of their lives at work, though some more information on opportunities outside of the office may have been good.
Very helpful; from the start we went to a meeting in the morning but the atmosphere was relaxed and the entire team was making jokes throughout. While there was some more stressful, fast-paced working environments in S&T, the employees were still very friendly and open.
Very good; getting to know the different cultures and challenges through work-shadowing helped me to determine my favorite desks. 90 minutes per rotation was, at times, a bit long - since some required fairly in-depth knowledge of finance, if the intern was not (for example) an economics student it was difficult to give anything more than a brief overview of the desk. As such, rotations often ran out of steam towards the end, so 60 minutes may have been more appropriate per desk (which would also allow us to see more desks in total in a day).
Everything Else
Although expenses to the CSR weren't reimbursed.
Work shadowing was perhaps the biggest way to meeting the employees; while we had the YBA event and networking at the Kings Stores on Friday there did not seem to be many employees there, and instead we primarily spent time talking between interns.
I very much enjoyed the YBA event and King's Stores event, though as stated above there seemed to be almost exclusively interns there rather than existing employees.
Some brief bits on CSR from one employee, but not much else
Yes; an excellent overall insight across a broad spectrum of desks in a nurturing environment perfect for fairly inexperienced first-years which helps them to develop their knowledge and skills in a fairly relaxed and friendly environment.
