The Role
PLEASE NOTE: This review was for a placement at General Motors prior to the amalgamation of Vauxhall and General Motors (The RateMyPlacement Team) I loved my time at GM. Working along side 50 other undergrads made this placement different from any other I had heard of. The amount of support and help I received all year has been so valuable and the skills that I have learnt during my time are things that I would have never have picked up without placement.
The GMIT department is a great team. I organised many social occasions during the year. Overall a great laugh, and I've met some great friends.
From handover to my final day, the support from not only management, but the rest of my team and other departments has been great. At GM we also have a mentor process, so quartely we meet up with someone who doesn't directly work with you, so that you can talk through any issues or concerns that you may have.
It varied from very quiet days to incredibly busy days. This is commen in an IT department were demands vary from day to day.
At the start, I shadowed in a lot of tasks, which was understandable as I was still learning so much. In the last 6 months I was able to take on my own projects. The responsibilities I had throughout the year made a difference to the business. In many cases, if I didn't do it, then no one else knew how to.
The skills I have learnt are something I can take back to my degree and future employment. Skills have included, communication (through email, phone and face to face), team work, facilitating, organising and my overall confidence.
The Company
A great laugh!
No problems.
I took part in Excel and presentation training over the year which were both good to be apart of. It would have been good to be apart of some more.
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
It is still unsure whether GM are starting up the Graduate scheme, however over this past year, 3 people who were undergrads in the past have come back to work at GM. I would definetly come back!
The Culture
Working along side 50 other students in the same situation as you makes GM a brilliant social company. We had nights out every week, some highlights include weekends in Birmingham, Liverpool and Newcastle. The handover social schedule for 2 weeks is also a highlight of the year
Living wise, my rent was cheap. Socially, Luton has little to nothing to offer, however surrounding areas (Milton Keynes, Watford, St Albans and London) were brilliant. London obviously was expensive.
See comment above
The communications department set up many events throughout the year.
