The Role
PLEASE NOTE: This review was for a placement at General Motors prior to the amalgamation of Vauxhall and General Motors (The RateMyPlacement Team) Working at General Motors is challenging yet fun. The employees are very helpful and very welcoming. I was given real tasks that made me feel I was part of the team. Additionally, Logistics department runs team building days and night outs which improves working relationship. General Motors also runs charitable events which undergraduates are encourage to volunteer to help.
I never felt isolated within the team. All my colleagues treated me like any other and I felt I was part of the team.
During my placement, I was assigned a mentor to help me settle down in the department. I was given training to help me do the job I was assigned. My supervisor also ensured that I have enough support and guidance with projects my manager gave me.
The tasks I was given was manageable. All deadlines where reasonable. However like any other job, there are times when it is very busy or very quite. Overall, I believe I have perfect balance.
I was given full responsibility when I conducted the dashboard feasibility study. I was the first point of contact in Logistics and the person in charge of contacting dashboard developers to arrange product evaluation.
The skills I have gained during my placement at General Motors is invaluable. With the job I was assigned, I improve my communication skills as I have to attend meetings, liase with my colleagues, answer phone queries and communicate with top level managers. My Excel skills has also improved as I do my daily tasks. There are many training opportunities that I take advantage of like negotiation, Microsoft Excel and Access, Logistics procurement training and many more. I have seen what it is like to be in the working environment, the experience made me more mature and be responsible for my own actions. All these skills I will take when I go back to university to make sure I will come out with a good grade enough to secure a graduate job.
The Company
There is so much going on within the Logistics department. All my colleagues are very friendly and we get on really well. We take our job seriously but do not take stress get on us when busy times arrive.

There are many personal training planned but only few took place.
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
The opportunity to apply for the graduate scheme is available. Before I left the company, there has been many previous undergraduates who were recruited after they graduated. This means that despite the economic downturn, General Motors is still recruiting graduates.
The Culture
Having recruited more than 50 undergraduates, the social aspect is fantastic. It is like being in university only we work hard and get paid.
Cost of living and socialising is reasonable. Renting a house with fellow undergraduates is around £200-£350ppm exclusive bills. As there is a large group of people going for a night out, the HR undergraduate normally negotiates a discount or free drinks.
I did not live in Luton during my placement. However I know for sure that my fellow undergraduates travel to Milton Keynes or St Albans for a nightout.
There are many events an undergraduate can participate in. Most undergraduates last year where involved in raising money for Children in need. GM was also involved in London to Brighton Cycling event which I personally got involved in.
