About You
Brilliant. RBS assembled a real diverse group of people from many relevant sectors such as marketing, trading and finance, and gave us a real treat of information. A great insight into how banking actually works.
The tiny things do matter in a group of over a hundred interns. We all were given personal diaries, info books, presentation slides and personalized name tags to help along the course. On a more interpersonal level, I guess there wasn't much they could do.
No stone left unturned here. Everyone doing M&IB, regardless of the sub-field (ie. Operations, Tech, Markets or IB) had to go through a 2-day induction dealing with all aspects of M&IB as a whole. This was followed by work shadowing for 2 days. Hence, we had a good view of the bigger picture as well as a view of how our specific department fit into this big picture.
This does not really have much to add to my uni studies, but it has convinced me that if I do end up in the banking industry, I will only look at Operations and nothing else.
The Company
Pretty well structures, down to the last detail. Our diaries gave us the daily schedule of events and where and when they would be held. The idea of introducing us to all fields first and then following up with department specific work shadowing was very helpful.
Quite nice, everyone was really friendly. There was indeed some air of competition, but I can say for sure that this was negligible. Everyone was helpful- if you needed something or some info, there was always someone to look out for you.
A lot of effort was put into everything to be honest. But in terms of personal development, there was a good number of talks on client handling, marketing skills and networking techniques. It was not superficial at all, and I have definitely come of the Spring Week with a better idea of how to handle people.
Work shadowing gave a first-hand look into the work culture and what my work would actually be.
Quite a lot. RBS is quite unconventional in that it is very friendly, does not have cubicles, and rewards active engagement and extra efforts. I've heard that not many other banks work this way.
They tried their best to sell RBS, and were highly successful. However, I still have no clue about how my other career options will reward me. RBS of course is not to blame for this, haha.
Everything Else
However, we had free food, drinks and travel and accommodation was paid for for those who needed it.
Work shadowing again.
Many. The large number of breaks gave a lot of chances to interact with other interns. We also had a sort of pub quiz, and a final networking event on the last day.
Obviously, every one has their own way of dealing with free time and this does not necessarily have to be through RBS. However, they have a good CSR program that offers a way to give back and enjoy at the same time. Also, a lot of good relaxing activities such as BBQs etc.
Most definitely, yes!!! Nothing to lose, lots and lots to gain!
