The Role
The work was interesting and completely new to me, having only recently finished my A-levels. I enjoyed the challenge of learning new things and being exposed to clients.
Colleagues included me in as much as they could. I had the opportunity to be involved in many different projects and was also given a lot of responsibility - I felt I was trusted to deliver quality work.
All staff of all grades were approachable and willing to help with any struggles I faced.
There were occasions, particularly during the start of my placement, where I had a lot of free time. This was good however as it allowed me to become comfortable with finding work myself by asking my colleagues if I could help. As my department moved into their busy season (towards the end of my placement) I was given a lot of responsibility and work to do.
As I began to become more comfortable at my job I was given responsibility to complete whole sections of the audit on my own. However, all work is reviewed by a senior. This is standard procedure.
Learnt a lot about general accountancy principals and about the operation of a range of organisations and companies, that will be useful for a range of career paths. The office and general life experience gained from the placement will also help with the future.
The Company
I enjoyed my time at the company and developed good relationships with colleagues, however I was working in a very professional environment and often with clients.
The placement was fairly organised. However, most of my experiences were organised by myself and there was no prescribed structure for the programme. This wasn't a bad thing, as it allowed me to organise parts of the placement myself - I became more independent as a result and was able to get involved with areas of the company that I wanted.
It would have been useful if part of the placement was based in a college, where we could study the theory behind the work.
Subsidised Canteen
Company Parties/Events
It has greatly increased my chances of going back to KPMG with a graduate job as they know me now and know how well I work and that I am compatible with the firm
The Culture
There were some work social events, however more would have made the experience more enjoyable.
Fairly expensive considering the fairly low salary.
Manchester city centre. Great student scene lot's going on every night
Would have preferred more. Looking back, there were opportunities where I could have organised these myself. If I were to repeat the experience, I would try to create organise activities myself.
