The Role
My internship was a very enjoyable experience. Everyday i was shown around different offices so i was always given something different to do. I didnt struggle to find enjoyment throughout my time.
Everyone i was surrounded by was very outgoing which gave a great atmosphere about the place. If i ever asked for help someone was always willing to explain things to me too.
I was always supported and guided by management during my year in industry. During the first few months i required more help from my supervisors and they happily helped but by the end i was fairly competent in my work.
I was as busy here as you would expect to be for any work you were being paid for. I never got particularly bored but there were times were i wouldnt have minded extra breaks
I was given some responsibilities during my year in industry but definitely not as much as permanent staff.
Spending a lot of my daily time on a computer meant my IT skills were greatly enhanced from this experience. While also my social skills and problem solving skills to improved. All these are very relevant to my degree course and have definitely assisted in my studies.
The Company
A very casual atmosphere which i really liked but is definitely not for everyone. People were always cracking jokes but people were serious at the right times.
The year in industry was very well organised by my university and they set me up very quickly with Shell straight after i my application was accepted.
My first month was spent undergoing inductions around the site and getting to know the area and safety precautions. After this things quietened a little and i was only trained on minor jobs when needed.
Hopefully once i complete my degree i will be able to gain a job with Shell or a company very similar. The company are very good at employee people who have taken year out in industry.
The Culture
Fellow placement students were set up together initially so it was very easy to make friends and then we were partially split among different areas.
In central birmingham it was expensive however there is plenty of student things to do where you can normally have a cheaper night
The night life was very good in my area but some times it was quite expensive
There were many socials during the year, they included meals out and nights out
