About You
The insight week was great, and a really good look into the world of working in property.
Considering I was only there for a week, I felt everyone in the team I was in made a real effort to talk to me and make me feel at home.
My mentor could not have been more helpful, and it was easy to ask anyone for help if I didn't know what to do. Everyone was also happy to be contacted for career advice, too, which was an added bonus.
It was more the experience and contacts that counted, and the advice and information given on career paths. My degree isn't really related to property.
The Company
There was no day-to-day structure as it were, however there was always something for me to do, and so I could essentially 'build my own' schedule. I was also encouraged to speak to members from other teams if I wanted to learn more about their areas. We all received a schedule for the week, including a Director's Lunch, a socialising event and an evaluation session.
Everyone was friendly, but obviously you're not going to make friends for life within a week.
In terms of career direction, a lot was done to advise us - lunch with Directors, meetings with grads etc.
Considering we were only there for a week, the work we were doing is obviously not as technical as it can get but I was surprised at how involved we were able to be in the work of the grads.
Everyone seemed really enthusiastic which was a great introduction. They discussed the ways the teams earn their money, and how this encouraged people to be entrepreneurial, which was evident. Being social counts for a lot - you have to be able to get on well with people. Not life and soul necessarily, but to be able to give good banter. I certainly felt we saw the office as it is, not a front put on for insighters.
I had already decided on property, but in terms of pathways I could ask any question I wanted and get an answer, talk to someone in that department (often the Director), keep business cards. The whole office was unbelievably helpful on this, and letting me get as wide an experience as possible.
Everything Else
Money for public transport expenses.
Scheduled drinks, Lunch with Directors, encouraged to meet others in the office.
Work drinks was fun, although maybe a bit more could have been done to include the insight students - felt like we had tagged along to work drinks as opposed to an opportunity to meet everyone. That said, you have to learn to network at some point, and if you worked there full time it wouldn't be a problem/
Seems to be a lot of social activities. Sports clubs, nights out etc.
Really good week.
