The Role
I enjoyed some of it but there were times that I didn't enjoy it, such as when I was sent out to do voxpops.
I was treated very well and given a good amount of work and support by most colleagues I talked to, but I was also patronizingly talked down to by one man who was editing a story of mine.
My supervisor was nice and helpful, and the man who managed my sub-editing experience was extremely friendly, supportive and eager to teach me even when his department was busy. But I didn't get the same level of support from other workers.
The balance was pretty good, I enjoyed being busy with many stories to do, yet I did spend some time bored when I was waiting for people to respond to me.
Mostly I had little responsibility, for example I wasn't trusted to do my own court reports and I wasn't given any big stories to write. I did get a big interview and feature to manage myself - but I never heard if it was published.
It taught me a great deal about professional sub-editing, which I really enjoyed. It also taught me that I don't want to work as a reporter!
The Company
Mostly dull, people didn't speak much as they were too preoccupied with their own work. But people I spoke to seemed mostly friendly.
It was far better organized than my placement at the Derby Telegraph newspaper. I was given a schedule for the week which was mostly kept to.
Not much, I felt. They didn't give me much responsibility and got me to do dull jobs they didn't want to do. However they did teach me a few things.
I didn't enjoy the work enough to want to do it every day. One week was enough - unless the job was in the sub-editing department.
The Culture
None that I knew of!
Average.
Not bad, but seeing as I live here anyway, nothing that exciting.
Nothing.
