About You
I was sad to leave!
We were continuously reminded that there were enough spots for all of us to convert to summer analyst position and that HCM were rooting for us to succeed since they had seen potential in us, hence why we'd got onto the Spring Programme.
Every task we were given to complete, was preceded by training so we were well prepared for every challenge.
The soft skills I further developed, such as presentation skills and teamwork, will be directly applicable to the core modules in my degree which are very group and presentation heavy. I will directly apply the technical training provided to my Investment Banking internship later this year, which will allow me to hit the ground running!
The Company
Every minute of the day was accounted for and ran on time.
All the candidates were happy to be sharing the experience and brought out the best in one another. We were rewarded for our enthusiasm with lots of treats, the best being the indoor funfair!
We had a day and a half of external training that covered accounting and valuation techniques. We were supplied with a large textbook so we could revise the material in our own time.
Unfortunately we didn't have any time on the Investment Banking desks because of confidentiality reasons. However, through networking events we were able to ask employees about their day-to-day tasks. Plus, we completed 3 case studies that were simplified versions of the transactions you'd be expected to participate in as an Investment Banker.
The majority of the talks and speakers put a big emphasis on the culture at Goldman Sachs and how it's different to the rest of the investment banks.
I went into the Spring Programme knowing that I wanted to do Investment Banking but I wasn't sure on which desk specifically. The programme is split between two focuses, M&A and Financing, as will be the case in the Summer Analyst Internship. I found this setup particularly helpful in deciding what desks I will be of most value.
Everything Else
As I live in London I had barely any travel and no accommodation expenses but the facility was there for those who needed it.
Nearly every day consisted of networking opportunities with employees of all levels of seniority.
Great if you have lots of questions like I did! They ranged from 'speed-networking' and round table discussions to quizzes and lunches.
We were informed about the activities you can get involved in as part of the affinity networks.
Without a doubt!
