About You
The spring scheme is really enjoyable and well organised by the team, with a great mix of social events and training alongside your time in two departments.
The firm has very open and friendly atmosphere, and I felt like part of the team for the two weeks.
A lot! Each vacation schemer has their own trainee buddy and supervisor and I always felt like I could turn to them whenever I had a question.
Given the type of tasks that you undertake, you get a real insight into trainee life and the work that each practice area is involved in. Through experiencing two departments and being able to speak to trainees about their experiences, I have a much stronger idea about which practice areas interest me most.
The Company
The scheme is well organised with a good mix of talks, training and social events, as well as the opportunity to get involved in work in two departments.
The firm has a really open and friendly atmosphere, and it is great environment to work in. The vacation scheme intake have also been very sociable and we have got along really well.
The first day involved lots of training on how to use the firm's systems, and there was also a really useful presentation skills talk. It was also great to see how much training there is for trainees in each of the different practice areas.
A vacation scheme is a great way to experience life at a firm, not just in terms of finding out about the work that you would be involved in as a trainee, but also meeting the people at the firm and seeing whether you like the atmosphere of the place.
There are opportunities to meet and talk to people at every level of the firm from trainees to the management committee so you really do get a feel for the company culture. I've realised that actually experiencing the culture of a firm is so much better than simply reading about it on paper, and Baker & McKenzie really does live up to expectations as being a friendly place to work.
The structured talks about departments and opportunities to talk to trainees have made me consider practice areas that I hadn't even thought of before yet now really interest me. Although I am still at an early stage, I will definitely bear in mind all that I have heard and learnt whilst here when it comes to considering seats for a training contract.
Everything Else
All vac schemers are paid weekly, which helps with transport/living costs.
There were lots of events to meet employees at every level of the firm.
Great fun. There is at least one social event organised per week with trainees and grad recruitment.
We had an organised talk about all of the available opportunities. There is lots on offer, including various sports teams and pro bono opportunities.
I was recommended by a friend and I would definitely do the same!
