The Role
Was great to meet the other intmerns and people currently working at Mercer - everyone was very friendly and made my 8 weeks most enjoyable. The work was interesting and ade time go extremely quickly.
As mentioned previously, all of my colleagues were friendly and welcoming. I was invited to team socials and many of them were enthusiastic to give me interesting work and help me learn more about their roles.
I was given as much as I could've needed. My team leader was the person to go to when I had any questions - he regularly asked how I was getting on and if I needeed anything. He arranged meetings so we could discuss my progress.
It varied from day to day, mainly dependent on the time of month. I was always given as much work as was available but some days there was not much. My buddy passed some of her work onto me and tried to her best to keep me busy. I never had absolutely nothing to do since when I had no actuarial work I could work on my presentation which I was required to prepare for the final day of my internship.
I was responsible for completing proper work, just as other graduates were. I felt I was given as much responsibility as I reaslistically could have been given.
The skills I learnt should help considerably after my degree since I hope to attain a career in a similar field. The training won't be as relevant to my degree since I don't study actuarial science - work at Mercer is very applied whereas university studies are more theoretical. I still consider what I have learnt to be useful, however.
The Company
It was quite a good balance. My team are sociable and chat quite often, although obviously have a lot of work to do so need to concentrate for the majority of the timee. The office in general was quite quiet.
I don't think I could fault the organisation. We all had support and work passed on to us however it was largely the responsibility of the interns to organise social events.
I think they invested as much as they could given the short time I was there. My colleagues gave me a lot of time to answer any questions I had. At the beginning of my internship the interns were given talks by various members of staff regarding the work we will be doing, technical training and providing us with industry knowledge. Detailed written material was produced to guide us through the eight weeks and was a good source of technical knowledge.
Subsidised Canteen
I would really like to work with Mercer upon finishing my degree. I have found the main aspect which distinguishes them from other firms is their employees - I got on with everyone and have become close friends with other interns. Mercer also offers excellent graduate training prospects and a very nice office and canteen!
The Culture
There was a good social scene amongst fellow interns - a group of four of us have become particularly close by having lunch together every day and often going for drinks after work. We didn't feel there was much of a social scene between the interns and most existing Mercer employees. I really enjoyed being in my team who occassionally went for a drink and we went out for a meal, however most other interns didn't have this. It was rare for a large number of colleagues and interns to meet after work - it was largely the responsibility of interns to arrange social events. My team were all lovely though!
We were in London so it was expensive - however we didn't let this deter us too much as we still wanted to have fun and were only there for 8 weeks. Plus at least we were earning so probably had more money than we would normally!
Again, we were in London so there were lots of places to go. As interns we often just went for a drink after work but we're currently trying to organise a more exciting night out! Unfortunately we can't afford to arrange them too often because of financial constraints!
Not many opportunities. As I have said previously, it was mainly up to the interns to meet after work for a drink. The Investment Consulting department appeared to organise more socials than in my department (Retirement).
