About You
The Spring Into Bournemouth event did provide a real clear introduction to JPMorgan in Bournemouth. We knew exactly what we were in for and we were given a timetable for the 3 days
The Bournemouth office has around 4,000 people and there were around 60 other students in the spring week event. It can be very easy to be lost in the sheer number of people and simply become an anonymous person in the background. However, I have to say that the HR department in charge of the spring week were very welcoming and supportive and quite fun as well
There was plenty of guidance and help throughout. We were given an itinerary on the first day in a booklet which was quite broad and covered most aspects of JPM in Bournemouth. The steps/ladder for the graduate scheme were clearly communicated so we become quite well informed about it
I wouldn't say the Spring week has given me an epiphany in learning. I was broadly aware of most aspects about the ideal candidate that JPM looks for. However, it did reinforce certain qualities that I am now aware that JPM actively looks for. JPM reinforced the overwhelming importance of networking. If I hand a quid for every time a JPM staff mentioned networking, I would have paid off my tuition fees! networking is important because your in a campus of around 4,000 people working for a company that employs around 250,000 people! Another characteristic that JPM rates highly is time management. We had a practise assessment centre where a group of 4/5/6 working through theoretical problems. Those who kept an eye on time were commended on this. Another aspect was to have a curious background. The MD gave a very good speech that struck well with me, if you have a process, look at what ways you can improve it. If you cant improve, go further up/down the chain to try and improve it. Also, always try and say yes to help with a problem. that can prove very worthwhile for your career down the line
The Company
The programme was very well timed. Impeccably so. We had set times for speeches from directors/fellow graduates alike and work shadowing. Time is money after all!
It was quite intense on the first day as we were bombarded with information and speeches... there were a few drooping heads by the end of the day! but I would say it was more relaxed the other two days. It felt comfortable, certainly not overwhelming. It was not like a trading room floor with people shouting at each other!
They did not invest much in me personally. The firm invested collectively in the 60 or so group of students who attended the spring week. The investment highlighted networking and networking networking and networking!!! We needed to network in order to develop and advance. Along with that, time management and team working and inquisitive nature were also highlighted
It was quite clear what a full time graduate job at JPM would entail. We had presentations explaining all the stages/aspects of the graduate role and we met people who are currently in the graduate programme who were in our shoes a few years earlier. The requirements of the job and typical day were clearly communicated
I have learnt that JPM is incredibly proud of the diversity of their workforce. They even sponsor the Round the Island race. This is not to attract new clients but is mainly for the staff. They always look inwards to fill job vacancies so you can move around all the time in different departments
Everything Else
I was a local so I didn't need any expenses paid for apart from lunch. However, other students who have come from Paris/Belgium/Copenhagen/Edinburgh did have accommodation and food and travel paid for which must have been nice!
We met many other employees at all stages of the corporate ladder. We met people who were the top dogs - the MD and other directors as well as mid level managers and lower level grads
There was a networking drinks event on the second evening at one the clubs in central Bournemouth however, I myself did not attend due to prior circumstances
We found that JPM holds regular events for its employees such as round the island race which aims to encourage networking (ha!) and a greater cohesiveness.
I would thoroughly recommend this to a friend. The contacts with employees and fellow students alike could be very useful in the future.
