The Role
I enjoyed the work I was doing during my placement and felt like the work I was doing was really quite relevant.
Everyone in the office made me feel very welcome and were happy to give me help when I needed it.
Support came more from my buddy and other less senior colleagues, there wasn't much interaction with management.
There was a huge amount of variability in the workload I had during my internship, some days I would have a lot of work to do and would be busy near enough from 9 until 5. Other days there would be near to no work to do and it would be up to me to find some work or to work on my project.
A large amount of the work I did was work for clients, which was actually sent on to clients. All work was double checked by qualified actuarys before being sent to check for mistakes though, so there wasn't as much responsibility on my back if I got anything wrong.
The work I've done during my internship has given me a great insight into the kind of work I would be doing as a graduate trainee actuary. I also think I'll be able to use the skills I've learned in my final year at university.
The Company
Everyone seemed to enjoy their work and there was a lot of interaction between staff members.
The internship was run extremely well with each stage of the application process and internship explained fully
I was given all the training I needed when i joined the company, and colleagues were aleays available if more help was needed.
I would be extremely happy to work with Mercer in the future, they seem like a company who value their staff highly and this is reflected in the overall atmosphere in the office.
The Culture
There wasn't much of a social scene in the office, although there were a couple of nights out organised by the social committee.
Edinburgh is quite an expensive place to socialise.
There are all the bars, clubs and resturants you could ever need within a stones throw of the office.
There were very few activities organised by Mercer outside of work.
