The Role
I have really enjoyed my time at Ernst & Young. Everyone has been so welcoming and I felt comfortable asking questions to develop my understanding of the auditing practice. This is a career and company I would want to be a part of after university.
As mentioned above I felt that all the colleagues were welcoming. They engaged me as part of the team immediately and I felt comfortable asking questions.
The intern manager and the summer intern team were constantly providing support and were very approachable to ask any questions that I needed answering. I also had a counsellor who on a weekly basis had a catch up session to see how I was and if I needed any support.
In most jobs I had a consistent flow of work, and when I finished my jobs list in some cases I was willing to help other staff with their work load to help meet targets and deadlines. This helped to display teamwork.
One week I was given responsibility for completing the whole payroll controls testing for a client. This was my responsibility to complete during the week and to decide whether there were effective controls in place. I successfully completed this task with a day spare and therefore helped other team members to help them meet deadlines.
Due to studying an accounting and finance course I believe that the experience of this internship will help me to understand the theory more easily, and also allow me to refer back to my internship for examples to fully understand my studies.
The Company
Everyone is very welcoming and will always take time out to help if you need it. I believe the people make the job enjoyable as well, and everyone works well as a team and this contributes to successful teamwork and a comfortable environment to work.
The intern manager and summer intern team had organised the timetables, equipment, travel, accommodation and social events that were part of the internship. I knew my responsibilities and what was required of me.
Everyone I worked with took time over making sure I understand the reasoning and importance behind the tasks and were happy to help answer any questions to further my development.
I have really enjoyed working for this company and this has confirmed that I want to be apart of this company after university.
The Culture
The intern manager and summer intern team organised many events such as meals, go karting, bowling, and a black tie event in order to make sure we understood the importance of a work life balance and that Ernst & Young cared about their staff. This allowed us to have a good socialise between other students and colleagues and relax after a hard day at work.
I was living in the area anyway, so the cost of living near to work were relatively cheap. Socialising was also cheap and Ernst & Young provided alot of the socialising free to get us involved in the activities and maximise our experience of the company as a whole
Pubs and bar were close by and relatively cheap. I didn't spend much time in them myself but living in the area I do know there is a lot of entertain to satisfy all different types of people.
The company actively encouraged us to do corporate responsibility days, which I completed two. Also the Ernst & Young had a netball, football and rounders team that we could get involved in, and constantly had events such as bbqs and pub quizs to get involved in.
