The Role
It's great experience! Working with some really good engineers on some exciting projects. Opportunity to test and sometimes drive Jag's and Land Rovers is always a bonus! About 70 interns taken on this year so there's a really good social life and I have made lots of friends. We all hang out at lunch and help each other out in work whenever we can.
Although the job depends a lot on experience, I learned a lot very quickly. As long as I proved I was willing and able to do the easier tasks given to me at the start, I was then given larger and more important projects and responsibilities. The team was great and we always have a good laugh. most people treat you as a member of the team rather than just a 3 month intern.
My boss and supervisor were brilliant. My official was always pretty busy but made sure to check up on me from time to time. He left me with a supervisor who really knew his stuff! He made sure to give me lots of work and kept me busy. However he also made sure that what I was doing was not just helping the team but also giving me good experience in important areas of the company as well as being useful to me in the future (i.e Applying for other jobs or returning to JLR). He often sat down with me for 1 on 1's in his spare time and i found that I learned a lot during these meetings.
During the first week or two it takes some time to get settled in so I was not so busy. However work then built up and I found myself constantly busy and looking forward to my breaks. This was not a bad thing though as the days and weeks flew! I worked on several projects with colleagues across the company so this meant I never got stuck with one task all day and I usually got in a few meetings or some testing as a distraction most days.
As I mentioned at the start, after I completed a few simpler jobs I was then given more responsibility. This included being a main point of contact with one of our suppliers and also controlling the implementation of a new prototype part. During the project it was my responsibility to modify senior managers personal cars. As you can imagine, this is not something I wanted to make a mess of.
During the placement I learned more about engineering than all of my time in University. Although it is important, book learning only teaches so much and this placement gave me the opportunity to apply what I have learned while also develop other skills such as project management, communication and leadership. Spending so much time with great engineer's I began to pick up their tips and tricks and learned how to actually be an engineer and what it really involves on a day to day basis.
The Company
Its a really good laugh. My team is pretty casual but still gets its work done which is a good combination!
A lot of interns had niggling new starter issues but after that it went really well!
I was only here for 3 months so other than getting paid every week, i didnt get much else from the company
Subsidised Canteen
Subsidised/Company Gym
Financial Bonus
Interns are given the choice of applying for a Grad position. The selection process is much shorter than applying from outside the company so there is a better chance of getting a spot!
The Culture
Over 50 of us living together in student halls so Friday night is always crazy! Most teams also do social events like going for a few drinks or out for food!
i lived in Coventry which was very cheap! Clubs and bars had really good deals
Close to lots of big places like Birmingham, Coventry and Leamington. All have really good nightlife!
Other than team organised events I didnt see much
