The Role
Again I dont like this question. My placement was a constant struggle. I had no manager, equiptment kept breaking noone to support me, help me or even knew what my role was. I took charge of the situation and I can honestly say that this was the best job ever...
I dont like this question. I felt lik family on a personal level but on a proffessional level I dont feel that the work I did was appreciated or valued. As nobody knew what I was doing, for a long time nobody realised the impact it had. It was only after a few months that I was given a manager and a graduate to train and by that time my struggle was over and I had made the job a lot easier for myself and the grad i was given by my new manager to train and my hard work, perserverance and commitment on my own was forgotten.
The first few months of my placement I had no manager or supervisor. The only other people who understoof my role was working acorss the country in sheffiled and only spent 50% of his time on the role.
Most of my placement has consisted of me being extremly busy which at times stopped me from being able to get involved in experiances that other interns were doing such as charity work.
Due to the fact that I had no support or guidance I had to learn everything myself. This included managing all of my own time, changing process and liasing with senior management. After 6 months I was promoted to the Lead position and given a graduate to train.
The only thing missing was that as my role was for a full year and it wasnt hands on technical at all then as I am doing an ITMB degree and have to build something for my dissertation then my placement didnt help me with any real skills to assist me with this.
The Company
I think I got lucky as a lot of the other grads and interns had a very different experiance to me but my team was a lot of fu despite the many changes that were constant as people in different offices around the country were getting made redundant.
I had no manager when I started. This was due to the fact that the lady who would have been my manager was on maternity leave and her deputy had left the role and not been replaced. When she came back from aternity leave she came back to a different management position. No additional support was provided. I had no help with my role and got no recognition for everything I acheived in the first few months. After a few months a manager who sits opposite me organised to absorb my team (of 1.5) into his team. He then began to identify areas which my team should have been doing and what had been missed while the old lead was on maternity leave and passed these responsibilites on to me aswell as the load I was already doing and promoted me to Lead. This was a huge responibility and a struggle. I had to train a new grad to spend 50% of his time helping me which wasnt really enough. Myself and this grad have made it our goal to ensure that this doesnt happen to the next placement student and have spent a lot of time on clear and easy to follow work instructions and defined responsibilities. There will also be a team leader coming back from maternity leave part time to take over as lead, leaving the intern to make the most of the positive side of a placement with enough challenging oppertunities left to keep them busy!
I did countless secuity courses, 2 ITIL courses, 1 project management course, and there were hundreds, many thousands more online courses I could do if i wanted or had the time!!

All 4 of last years interns were offered graduate positions at HP when they come back from univeristy on the basis that they achive a 2:1 in their degree. There are 6 interns here this year and I have high hopes of being offered a contract to come back too.
The Culture
Grads and interns ususally went out every time there was a new intake of grads to welcome them to the community. This is every 2 months or so!
