The Role
Having worked here for a year, I can really understand why IBM has the great reputation it has - there were many valuable opportunities to get involved with outside of my job role.
I work in a team which is spread all over the world and yet my manager ensures that we have a close team where she schedules weekly teleconference meeting so that we could catch up with what everyone was doing. This had a real benefit early on in my Placement year as I had more confidence to ask questions to colleagues in India.
I had fantastic support from both of my managers. I had a task manager which I reported to for day to day activities; she invested a lot of time with me early one which has enabled me to add real value to her team. I also have a line manager who supports me with my career development and helps me to find additional opportunities outside of my job role to utilise my placement year.
To start with I was quite busy learning all of the processes that come with the job role, once I learnt all of those it was down to me to take on new responsibilities and take out opportunities outside of my team to develop a wider understanding of IBM.
I worked for a large part of the organisation and I would argue that I was given the right amount of responsibility to challenge myself and there was always something extra I could take on to push myself further and add value to the team.
Developed skills core, functional and industry skills that will be used for life.
The Company
I worked in the Southbank office in London which tended to be busy, however sitting around the people I sat with, they always found time to have some fun!
Very well run Placement. Structured programme throughout the year and plenty of opportunities to get involved with outside of my job role.
I believe that in order to fully make the most of your placement year, its down to the Intern to go out and find additional opportunities. People were very friendly when I approached them asking for an opportunity and I was overwhelmed by the support and time they gave.

100+ Interns based in the Southbank office, always something going on outside of work!
London isn't the cheapest of places but IBM provide London based Interns with a additional living allowance which helps!
