The Role
I felt that working at IBM really gave me a chance to develop skills in a variety of areas, the work was quite interesting but at times could get mundane.
My colleagues were very welcoming which made the settling in process much easier. I felt that as soon as I started, I was a valued member of the team.
The management review structure at IBM is fantastic and consists of frequent meetings to assess performance and give guidance on areas to improve. If I was ever unsure about a process or situation, my supervisor would be only happy to help.
With my role being a Finance role, I tended to be very busy around month end and fairly quiet during the middle of the month. However, I felt this helped as it meant I could participate in education courses to further enhance my knowledge.
A fair amount of responsibility was given to me at the start of my placement and I was expected to quickly settle in. After this initial stage, I would have liked to have more responsibility on the tasks that I do.
When back at university I will be much more efficient with my time management and this will help me when completing my final year project. It has been an incredible opportunity for me to broaden my employability skills and I think that they will invaluable when applying for a grad job in the future.
The Company
My department were always very social and had a great sense of humor which helped at the quieter times of the month and aided in the overall positive atmosphere of the office.
The main organization within IBM that recruits students was very efficient in dealings with the students. The process was seamless and the structure of inductions was very helpful.
IBM give you endless possibilities to develop your skills and further your knowledge and always encourage placement students to get involved in activities other than their everyday work.

The process of applying for the grad scheme in IBM is not what you would imagine. The placement roles are not available as grad roles and so even if your performance is the best the company has had, you won't be offered a grad role straight away. However, each student gets ranked on their performance against all the other students and the top 25% that apply back get fast tracked through the grad application process.
The Culture
Placement students tend to meet up for lunch everyday and also organise numerous nights out.
I lived in a small town in Scotland and so the living costs were cheap, and so was the beer!
Glasgow has the best nightlife I have ever experienced.
There were lots of 5-a-side and 7-a-side football to get involved in. I myself played both twice a week.
