The Role
The team that I was involved in during my placement made my time at HP very enjoyable. Different aspects of the job contributed to a great time during my placement. A
I feel like a valued member on accounts that I am involved with and this is a great motivational factor to me. However being a intern I do not feel that valued within my team as there are other employees with a lot more experiences and qualifications suited to do the same job as me.
My manager was great during placement, he supported me every step of the way and I feel that he was very committed to developing my career and put me in contact with his connections to help me do this.
In my job role role I have my own dedidcated accounts so my work levels adjust around how much work is needed in connection to these. Normally I am very busy which keeps me motivated for whole days at work. During down times of work I can get involved in many other activities outside of my job role. So I would say you can be as busy as you want during this placement by taking on extra work if you need to or just stay to your day to day tasks.
The level of responsibility given to me during this placement was very suprising. I was given accounts that I had to actively engage with account teams on. My actions could affect the retention of customers and finances of the company which I found was a lot of pressure during the early months of my placement but soon got used to this.
I feel that the skills I developed during the placement can be split into two. Educational skills that I can carry into my final year of degree study I found that this placement did not really contribute to. A very limited amount that I learnt can be taken onto my course as my placement and degree course differed a lot if background. However life skills that I have learnt such as team working, communication etc. which I think are most important are the skills that I have developed the most over the year and will bring back to my final degree year.
The Company
Team members within the team done a lot to keep team moral up by getting people to participate in group activates inside and outside of work.
The placement was set up reasonably well, However I took the same onboarding and training as permanent employees so I feel this is why it was so well organized.
Many courses available to take and be run by your day to day activities. HP does invest a lot of time and money into furthering my knowledge, which I feel is motivational.
Company Parties/Events
Healthcare from home
I will defiantly be looking into getting a job back with HP in the future. I have been talking to a lot of employees within the company to find out what is the best route to do this and who can help me get back into the company later on down the line.
The Culture
Intern socials would happen regularly during the placement. Also socials with departments were held which interns were encouraged to attend.
The cost of living was very cheap in Bracknell/Reading area where my placement was held.
Accommodation is very close to the city center and being a student area there are always different club nights on to attend.
I found that there were many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work. However this depends on who you know within the company, Different events are organized by different people and are not always communicated to all employees. So having a large networking base is key to finding out about activities outside of work.
