The Role
IBM placed me to a role that suited my degree so I was able to apply theory learned at Uni in real life
I was treated equally by colleagues at all levels
Not only was I provided with a Personal Development Manager who helped with any issues through the year, members of my team and graduates were always offering advice.
My role started busy and when I was used to the workload I sought out more. There are also lots of voluntary activities to get involved in
I was an integral part of the team and wasn't treated differently just being I was on a placement
I have gained more motivation when completing tasks as well as developed key competencies and a professional persona
The Company
There were always people to talk to whether that be members of your team or wider IBM. It is quite a corporate environment in terms of clothing but generally people are all really friendly and happy to engage with you.
Most placement students were given a handover period with the student they were replacing to aid settling in. All information was provided via group emails. This included information on review dates, how to set up things on your laptops, upcoming events, how to apply back as a grad etc.. IBM seem very experience with placement students
Every IT are allotted a personal development manager who you meet with through the year for reviews and also when ever you need to. You are required to have reviews at 2, 6, 9 and 12 months points. This includes an initial presentation where objectives should be set, 6 month write up of your performance to date, 9 month presentation to further express progression throughout the year then a final 12 month write up to document how to did over the year and whether objectives were met
Flexi Time
Company Parties/Events
Working from home
I am hoping to return as a Graduate!
The Culture
There were over 100 Placement students based in London so there was always an opportunity to get involved in social activities. Naturally different friendship groups formed around Christmas time but people were still social around the office and externally
Living in central London cost me a fortune - did not get to save as much as I would have liked. It was fortunate that before starting, IBM set up a facebook group of all students starting when you were so we were able to find people to live with for the year.
Central London has so much nightlife to offer for whatever your taste
Arts, clubs, volunteering, etc etc...
