The Role
It was an amazing chance to meet new people, experience a worldwide organisation and gain an experience of working in a fast-paced, high-profit world.
They had lots of tasks to give me, however most of them were trivial, dull and admin based, however I understand these have to be done by someone, and my team appreciated this when delegating them to me.
Great support through the placement scheme through 'Foundation' you have a personal development manager and lots of other contacts to support you.
It seriously varied on the time of year/ time in the quarter but I found myself without anything to do on a daily basis- which trust me gets boring after the first few months!
This depends on who the tasks were delegated by and what types of work it was. You can also branch out and request further responsibility. The level of responsibility also increased throughout the duration of the placement!
I would say the applicability to my degree can be debated, however it gave me a clear vision on where I would like to work in the future and also provided me with extremely valuable skills which I can take forward into my career.
The Company
The atmosphere in the Portsmouth office was awesome- lots of events with other placement students and opportunities to get involved in loads of activities outside work!
The placement scheme provides you with regular training, feedback and reviews to support you throughout the entire year. You are set clear objectives and goals and I cannot fault the HR, Foundation or application process. They are extremely helpful and thorough.
There are regular training activities, compulsary development days and lots to get involved in. If you wish to take part in further courses for your own development or shadowing in exciting areas of the business- you can do so with the approval of your manager.
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
Above 25 days holiday
Working from home
They don't offer marketing roles, but placement students are prioritised in the graduate recruitment process.
The Culture
The social scene with other placement students is in my opinion, the best thing about working at IBM- it's like uni but with money!
Portsmouth is super cheap rent and an average cost of living!
Terrible! unless navy pubs and tacky bars are your thing!
Giveback is awesome and there are loads of events going on!
