The Role
The job provided real responsibility from day one, offering an exciting variety of tasks and duties to work on throughout the year. The team were extremely welcoming and approachable and made an effort to recognise hard work.
The division I worked within were supporters of a Reward and Recognition Scheme which allowed them to award me with vouchers whenever I went the extra mile on a piece of work or completed it within short a short timescale.
Weekly catch-up meetings were held between myself and my manager to dicsuss the workload being handled at that moment in time as well as any concerns I was feeling. My manager was easy to approach and offered support to me on a continuous basis.
The workload was consistently high, meaning that my multi-tasking and prioritising skills had to be polished up rather quickly. Assistance was provided in improving these skills in the form of a "Time Management" workshop which helped me in perfecting my "to-do" lists and making efficient use of my day. I personally prefer working under pressure in challenging roles, so to me this is what made the job exciting and gave me a valuable experience.
I oversaw two major projects in my time with the company, each of which were key to the business and the way it communicated with memebers of the team and external customers. In addition to these projects I was also given ownership of co-ordinating an exhibition and managing the creation/printing of core product resources.
The Company
One of the larger divisions of the company, the office was always very busy and consisted of a team of around 14 people. Generally people kept themselves to themselves during the working day with the occasional chat here and there. Effort was made to attend regular team lunches however to ensure that the right work/life balance was achieved.
The whole process from application to termination at the end of the year was faultless and stress free. The internship was well organised with various workshops to attend in the first few months to help us settle in and also with thorough product training in my division. Only thing that could have been improved was with finding accomodation in Bracknell itself which was left down to us to organise.
The company provided us with a number of workshops to both increase our awareness of 3M and also to develop our personal skills. These inlcuded: - Brand Awareness - E-Marketing - Lotus notes and Siebel training - Time Management Skills - Presentation Skills
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Subsidised/Company Gym
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
The company have a highly respectable Graduate Scheme and place employees on career paths with clear progession prospects.
The Culture
Unfortunately for our year, many of the students commuted in and out of work from the London areas making socialising outside of work difficult to organise a regular basis. Despite this, we did manage to arrange monthly nights out and would eat together as a group most days. There is opportunity within 3M to also participate in many sports teams including; Cricket, Touch Rugby, Netball and Football.
Lived in Bracknell itself a house of 4 people where rent was very reasonable. Around £280 per month excluding bills. Nights out were typically in nearby Reading and averaged around £40-50
Nightlife was a good laugh and was relatively cheap due to it being in a student area.
There were Sports teams in Netball, Football, Cricket and Touch Rugby.
