The Role
I really enjoyed the placement year. I had two roles over the course of the year which is quite rare but enjoyed both for different reasons. I also enjoyed the opportunities with shadowing other roles and the volunteer and education scheme which IBM run is very valuable and gives a nice change to just doing the day to day role.
I felt the work I was doing really made a difference and had quite a few people relying on me for certain pieces of work.
My manager was very supportive and helped me to achieve my goals and find opportunities more tailored to what I wanted to do later on.
I was relatively quiet to start with but filled my time with the education that was provided. I got busier with the new role in the second half of the placement and then found a good balance of education and work.
I was given a lot of responsibility and people relied on my input for things, especially during monthly reviews etc as I was in charge of creating the metrics for them.
My placement has set me up brilliantly for the world of work, whether that be with IBM or a different company. I will definitely be applying back for the graduate scheme and hope to stay on but if not it has still been a very valuable experience and will seriously improve my prospects.
The Company
Fairly quiet a lot of the time, especially on Fridays but the option to work from home is fantastic.
There is a scheme called Foundation which are in charge of looking after all placement students and graduates. They are very supportive and organize events to help with career development etc.
As mentioned previously, Foundation organized events to further our development which was very helpful. Also the free courses that are available are a great source of education.
Flexi Time
Working from home
The prospects are good to carry on working with IBM. The scheme and pay are both very appealing however number wise it is very difficult to get onto.
The Culture
Just like University due to so many students being based where I was.
The living costs were fine in relation to salary. I also believe that if you work in London you get paid extra to cover it.
Due to being in a university town, the nightlife was quite good.
IBM run a volunteer scheme which host events in the community. Examples of this are interview days in schools or demonstrating technology in the community.
