The Role
The placement at Microsoft was absolutely fantastic. I worked within the Xbox EMEA Marketing team for 12 months. From attending the Kinect launch event, to developing my own webpage that was deployed to Xbox.com across 8 markets - I had an absolutely amazing job role. I worked closely with the Xbox EMEA Social Media manager which was a great insight to see how much influence social media has during online marketing executions.
Everyone within Microsoft/Xbox made me feel extremely valued during my placement and didn't brandish me with the name tag of 'intern' at any point of the year which was a great surprise to me.
My manager was extremely busy during my placement due to the fact that Kinect was launching in the immediate future and because it was Xbox's busiest year in terms of releasing first party game titles. However, he had a lot of time available for me and was extremely supportive throughout the year.
Somedays I was underworked, however I was given a lot of responsibility and therefore the jobs I executed on were extremely important to the business. I was the mobile manager for Xbox's mobile strategy across 9 markets in EMEA.
I was given a huge amount of responsibility. I was the mobile manager for Xbox's mobile strategy across 9 markets in EMEA, which was a huge priority for the Xbox business moving into FY12.
Hugely.
The Company
The fun literally did never stop. The culture in Xbox was slightly more relaxed than any other departments in Microsoft as you would expect. Dress code consisted of hoodies, jeans, trainers - anything you wanted! Staff were able to play on an Xbox console anytime they had some spare time and once a month all staff would have the opportunity to play a new game title that was launching later that month. 'Cake Thursdays' were the particular highlight in the office.
Absolutely fantastically. No feedback for improvement could be offered here.
Training courses were readably available free of charge.

The 'MACH Scheme' is one of the most sought after graduate schemes in the country and I would most definitely recommend applying to this fantastic company.
The Culture
YES! There was about 85 industrial placement students, not all like minded, however a great social scene was ever present. Nights out were a constant appearance of the work calendar.
As a Manchester lad I found living in Reading was quite expensive.
Once again, Reading. Not much else needs to be said here.
I attended a football tournament in Oslo representing Microsoft and was on the football team that played once a week. Opportunities were quite literally endless.
