Financial Services Audit Intern Review

Overall it was a very rewarding and challenging experience, I would most definitely recommend doing one to really understand what it is to do audit.

Most people were really helpful when I asked for help and answered any questions I had. I felt at the start however that I was more of a liability that I was of help, however as I got the hang of the tasks I was given I felt a more valued member of the team, with feedback from colleagues saying they were glad I had been there to help.

This varied depending on the teams I was working with but most managers I worked with did take the time to get to know me and answer any questions that I had. The main woman in charge of me was really helpful and organised a lot of work for me which I appreciated a lot.

This varied a lot. On a few of the jobs there was a lot of waiting around with nothing much to do. This is partly because some of the clients were slow at providing information, which meant that others members of the team worked on their other clients. These days were my least favourite, especially as I was conscious not to press the others too frequently for some kind of work, but just enough so they knew I wanted some. However there were other days where I worked hard all day which were much more interesting and challenging, and these days gave me a real insight as to what it was like to be an actual KPMG employee.

I was surprised at the level of responsibility I was given, especially in terms of talking to clients. At times I felt like I was thrown into the deep end too much as I had no prior accounting knowledge, so to talk to clients about various figures was quite confusing and tricky at times. However it was good to be pushed and I gained a lot of confidence due to this.

Having a routine of working all day has improved my work ethic at university.

This depending a lot on the client I worked with as I worked with different audit teams. Some teams were more fun to work with than others but most KPMG employees I met were really easy to get on with and have a laugh with.

One problem I came across was that we weren't given any feedback about out how we were doing. Furthermore it was only in the last week I got told I was getting an partner interview (after I had emailed asking). However it was organised in terms of knowing what clients I was on.

You get a clear feeling that KPMG want you to continue with you after the internship.

After my partner interview I was offered a job with them in the London office.

I was working in the Reading office, and there was little interaction with the other interns with only a meal at the start and end of the internship. However I believe that the social scene is better in London as there are more interns.

Reasonable. I got a cheap house.

Didn't experience it through KPMG but the nightlife isn't bad.

There were a few sporting opportunities but nothing other than that.
