The Role
I enjoyed my placement year in Fujitsu as I was giving a lot of responsibilities, which varied from day-to-day. I started off with a level of work load which progressed throughout the year.
I felt valued by mainly my colleagues as they commended the work I did for them and were good at giving positive and constructive feedback. However, this was not the case with my manager as I hardly got any feedback regarding the work I did except during my annual appraisal.
There was a good level of support from my manager as we had regular meetings to discuss any issues, leaving with actions to improve.
This varied depending on the time of the month. This was expected as it is a common thing in the industry for work load to fluctuate. Most of the time, I always had something doing and was proactive in looking for training courses during downtime.
Initially I had a low level of responsibility as I was still trying to understand working in the industry and learn the terminologies. As time went on, I started to manage customer accounts and therefore my work load increased.
The skills I have learnt will help me for life as I have developed my knowledge of the industry and the working life in general. I have also improved my excel skills, time management and interpersonal skills.
The Company
The office was extremely quite most times and most people just got on with work with little conversation. We never went out as a team for lunch and during the christmas dinner most of the team did not turn up so I had to sit with a different team.
The placement year was really organised and well structured. We had events outside of job role as an IP year which were really good. However, my placement role was a newly created role with little or no organisation. It got to a stage where I had to refer to my job description to actually see what I was meant to be doing. The role pretty much became what I made of it, which might not have worked for other people. Thankfully, we have been working on ways to put in more structure for the new placement students
Not so much. I found that most of the trainings were either some experienced person teaching us how to use a software for an hour and then us having to learn most of it on the job. Also, most of the time I was training other people rather than getting trained. As there were so many new starters across my team during my placement year. I also tried to book on to excel training courses and presentation courses but was turned out on both occasions. I put together a personal development plan and did not get any feedback on it, not sure if it was even looked at.
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
The companys seems to have a lot of opportunities and most people higher up love working here, which is always a good thing.
The Culture
Yes, there was a good social scene amongst the IP year and graduate community as a whole. Not so much as a team, in the team I worked in. It was pretty dull with no team events. Important to note that this is not the same across the other teams in Fujitsu as I have heard a lot of good reviews. Guess I was just a bit unlucky in this area.
My accommodation was affordable and so was food and doing things in general. Also, there are good links to London and Windsor, which is always a good thing.
What nightlife? Non-existent. However, again easy to go into London, Reading or Windsor in search of a night life. I did not mind this too much as I usually travelled home or back to university a lot of weekends.
Once in a while events got organised by the graduates but did not attend as at that point I had made other plans.. There wasn't really any sporting or club activities to get involved in. We had a christmas party and also have a summer one coming up.
