The Role
Fantastic opportunity, great people, they put a lot of effort and invested a lot of time training you. The part prior to the internship though was a bit disorganised but this is probably due to the fact that it was the first internship run post merger.
A lot of colleagues were really keen to teach you and to pass on their work to you. Great atmosphere with everyone being really supportive. The work was very indicative of what you would be doing if you actually had full-time employment there. Could have been nice to shadow some people higher up in the company though.
Given lots of supprt and guidance - weekly feedback meetings so you could try to improve your performance the whole way through.
Extremely busy - we had all our daily work plus an intern project which I had to do at home, and had to even turn down some office work as I had so much to do. Great opportunities to get involved.
Quite a lot of responsibilty - had to do official client work, and give a 'technical lunch' on a topic to the full-time employees in the department. Any piece of work by anyone working there gets double-checked so they are able to give a lot of responsibility knowing that mistakes should be picked up on anyway.
Learnt a lot about the work in the office, presentation and project skills, the standards of work required in the industry and a lot about the actuarial exams and other information about a few of the practises at towers watson. Have decided on an actuarial career because of it.
The Company
Fantastic atmosphere - everyone is very supportive and keen to answer questions. Lots of socialising in the office aswel with office sports teams and lots of after work trips - especially to the pub.
It was very well set up and they did put a massive amount of effort in to make sure we received every opportunity - i.e. feedback meetings, two induction days to learn about the business etc. However, there were a few time-lags in the actual set-up of the internship though, i.e. in processing the contract, but this was due to it being their first run post-merger and I'm sure it would be much smoother next year.
They invested a great amount - I'd say to the same extent that they would invest in a new graduate at the company but occasionally the short version just so we wouldnt be spending too long training and no time actually doing! Additionally, all my co-workers were always willing to answer any question, and in fact they really encourage it.

They are still processing all the feedback received on all the summer interns and have set a date in the near future for a phonecall to inform on whether they are offering a contract for employment starting September 2011.
The Culture
Fantastic social scene - thrown into all the socials in the first week and then they kept it going throughout. We got to be there for some of their big party events of the year, including when the studying actuaries receive their exam results and theres a big celebration. Very friendly people.
Its London so its bound to be expensive, however as a summer intern the precedent has been set that interns do not pay for anything. (However when they get a job they join the ranks of workers who end up paying for the new interns drinks!)
Again, it was London so it was amazing.
Lots of sports evenings which happened at least weekly, a few additional activites like dinners and things aswell and a trip to the theatre. All the interns are very strongly encouraged to attend as much as possible.
