The Role
Despite what is going to be a fairly negative review I'd start by saying that I don't think this would be a bad company to do a placement with. Had I been in another team I think this review would be very different. I think I got unlucky with where I was placed. After the first few months I was close to leaving and returning to university. There was a lack of variety in work which was not particularly exciting. Days dragged and I was not learning as much as I hoped. There was initially a plan for my placement but unforeseen circumstances meant those plans were not possible. After that there was no structure for my development, just a succession of similar jobs.
By the end of my placement I was treated as any other team member was. Not much of a team feel though. Lots of knowledge but little shared.
Rarely saw supervisor, almost felt like an inconvenience at times. Guidance was provided by a colleague (who was very supportive through the 12 months). I did not feel valued by my supervisor unless I could do something for their benefit. Zero praise or review of progress until the very end of the year (to get me to return) and no effort to make my time in the company interesting or varied.
Endless stream of work so always kept busy, just had to ask for a knew job to work on. Problem being each job was very similar and therefore dull.
In the end I was given as much responsibility as anyone else. Work was still checked but that is procedure for all colleagues.
I have become fairly skilled in an area that is in high demand in the industry. It is an area that would be useful in an engineering career but I would not want to be doing that permanently anyway.
The Company
Quiet team, little interaction. All work was computer based. Slow days.
As previously mentioned there was a long term project that I was due to be part of with colleagues. That project collapsed a couple of months in there has been no thought to my development from my supervisor since. Internships as a whole are organised very well though and communication from HR was very good though.
I was allowed on any free courses/seminars. I went on 4 during my time there. I was obviously trained to carry out work I was responsible for. There were courses I could have been on to increase my development however. There are many other areas of the company that I would have liked to experience. It was mentioned on several occasions but nothing was arranged. Also never got chance to experience the product.
The company is growing rapidly so future job prospects are promising for anyone who does a placement.
The Culture
This is not something that I really investigated so I couldn't comment.
Reasonable if you know where to go
Leamington is not a party town but there are plenty of pubs etc and fairly close to Coventry/Birmingham
Went bowling with colleagues on a couple of occasions and the local squash club was full of JLR employees.
