About You
The insight programme organised in the Easter break was an enjoyable experience, which lasted 3 days. There was an insight into all the different aspects of the Global Banking and Markets divisions.
Unlike other insight programmes that I had attended, I felt that this insight programme was a little larger, with about 50 people. This meant it didn't feel as personal, and I felt less valued, although still valued.
Staff members were on hand from different divisions to answer our questions and queries, and were all friendly, approachable and very welcoming. We were helped in many different ways during the course of the insight.
I learned a great deal about the company that is HSBC and the divisions within the company, and the industry as a whole. I feel this information will be invaluable in the future, especially when it comes to career choices.
The Company
We were given a clear timetable before the start of the programme, so there was no confusion as to what was happening. I did not feel like there could be any improvement to this aspect of the insight programme.
In general, everyone I spoke to said the atmosphere was positive, and thanks to the welcoming staff, we felt at ease. I felt relaxed during the entire insight, and did not feel under pressure or awkward at any time.
Although the programme only lasted 3 days, we gained some development of general business skills, interview techniques, and other things that would be generally useful in the world of work, and particularly in the sector.
The insight was very helpful as it covered all areas of the Global Banking & Markets divisions, so I felt I knew exactly what to expected from each different division, and also what work I would be faced with.
HSBC was clear in underlining its company culture throughout the week, in that it is a more conservative bank than some others, and this was clear from many presentations. In this respect it was very clear.
Everything Else
I was reimbursed for my travel fares (train) and also my underground tube fares during the week, and it was simple to get the expenses back.
We had plenty of opportunities to network with the employees, including a sit-down dinner and an evening at the bar with many different divisions, including one division CEO. I would say there was a great amount of opportunity in this regard.
The networking events were very well planned and felt very relaxed, as it was an out-of-work setting. The employees were all open and happy to chat about everything about the business and their lives.
Only being an insight week, I did not really get much insight into what employees do outside of work, but I was not expecting to find this out, and so did not ask about it during the course of the week.
I would wholeheartedly encourage anyone to apply to this programme, as it made my career decisions a lot clearer, and developed my understanding of the industry and developed my commerical awareness.
